Isaiah Thomas Pushes for NBA Return with G League Stint, Eyes Comeback
Isaiah Thomas, the former Boston Celtics All-Star point guard, is once again on the path to an NBA comeback. After years of fluctuating performances and a string of injuries, Thomas is back, this time with the Salt Lake City Stars, the G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz. The 35-year-old has signed with the Stars once again, after showing his skills last season in a brief stint that caught the attention of the Phoenix Suns, leading to a call-up to the NBA.
It’s been a rollercoaster ride for Thomas, who made a name for himself as a lethal scorer, most notably with the Celtics during the 2016-2017 season. He averaged a remarkable 28.9 points per game and led Boston to the Eastern Conference Finals. His 53-point performance against the Washington Wizards, on the day of his late sister’s birthday, remains one of the most iconic moments in Celtics history. But, injuries, specifically a hip issue, started to derail his promising career, and he’s since bounced around the league on various teams, never quite regaining the level of play he once exhibited.

Despite the setbacks, Thomas has remained persistent. In the 2024-25 season, after spending time in the G League, Thomas played six games with the Phoenix Suns, proving that he still has something left in the tank. His numbers in the G League were impressive: 32.5 points and 5.3 assists per game. That kind of performance is hard to ignore, and it was enough to earn him another shot at the NBA. Now, as he returns to the Stars, Thomas is hoping for another opportunity at the highest level.
Thomas’ journey is one filled with determination. Once selected 60th overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 2011 NBA Draft, he’s had a career filled with highs and lows. He was traded to the Boston Celtics, where he had the best years of his career, forming a dynamic backcourt duo with the likes of Jae Crowder and Avery Bradley. But after being traded away to Cleveland, a series of injuries and unfortunate circumstances halted his momentum. Still, Thomas hasn’t given up, continuing to chase his dream of an NBA return.
At 35 years old, many might think it’s too late for a comeback, but Thomas isn’t letting age or past injuries stop him. His time in the G League, coupled with his brief stint with the Suns, shows he still has the drive and the talent to make a difference on the court. And with his competitive spirit and sharp scoring ability, Thomas is making a strong case that he deserves one more shot in the NBA. Time will tell if the journey back to the league will be successful, but for now, Thomas is focused on making the most of his time with the Salt Lake City Stars. If he continues to perform at a high level, an NBA team could give him another chance to shine at the big stage.
