Jack Hughes Seals Thrilling OT Victory for Devils Over Canadiens
In an electrifying clash at the Bell Centre, Jack Hughes emerged as the hero for the New Jersey Devils, netting a dramatic breakaway goal with just 54 seconds left in overtime to secure a 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Montreal clawed their way back from a two-goal deficit, tying the game 3-3 early in the third period thanks to a booming slap shot by Alexandre Carrier off a face-off. Despite their resilience, the Canadiens couldn’t overcome the brilliance of Hughes in overtime. Hughes, who described the Canadiens as a “fast team,” praised his squad’s perseverance, especially after Hischier exited the game early in the third due to an undisclosed injury.
Jakub Dobes, in only his sixth NHL start, was a standout for Montreal, making 40 saves and keeping his team in contention throughout the game. However, New Jersey’s Jake Allen held his ground with 29 saves, ensuring the Devils remained in control during critical moments.
The Devils have now won nine straight games against the Canadiens, tying a franchise record for their longest winning streak against a single opponent. For Hughes, his overtime goal was his eighth, placing him second in franchise history, tied with Scott Niedermayer.
