John Klingberg Joins Edmonton Oilers on a One-Year Deal
John Klingberg, a seasoned NHL defenseman, has officially joined the Edmonton Oilers on a one-year contract. The announcement, made on January 17, 2025, marks a significant addition to the Oilers' blue line as the team gears up for the remainder of the season. Although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, Klingberg's experience and skills make him a valuable asset to the roster.
The 32-year-old Swedish player had a challenging season last year, appearing in only 14 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs before undergoing season-ending hip surgery in December 2023. Prior to his stint in Toronto, Klingberg played for the Minnesota Wild and Anaheim Ducks during the 2022-23 season, where he accumulated 33 points, including 10 goals and 23 assists, over 67 games. His career-high season came in 2017-18 while playing for the Dallas Stars, tallying an impressive 67 points in 82 games. Klingberg also played a pivotal role in the Stars' journey to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020.

Over his NHL career, which began when the Dallas Stars selected him in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Draft, Klingberg has amassed 412 points, comprising 81 goals and 331 assists, across 633 regular-season games. His playoff track record is equally commendable, with 39 points in 63 postseason appearances. These numbers underscore his offensive capabilities from the back end and his potential impact on the Oilers' strategy.
The Oilers, currently tied for first in the Pacific Division with a 29-13-3 record, are making moves to strengthen their lineup after significant changes on defense. The offseason saw departures of key players like Cody Ceci, Philip Broberg, and Vincent Desharnais. Klingberg’s arrival brings a mix of experience and offensive prowess to an already formidable team led by stars such as Connor McDavid.
With a Stanley Cup Final appearance still fresh in their minds after narrowly losing to the Florida Panthers in 2024, the Oilers are poised to push even harder this season. Klingberg’s signing signals their determination to solidify their defensive core and make another deep playoff run. Fans eagerly await the impact of this addition as the Oilers prepare to face the Vancouver Canucks this Saturday.
