Jonathan Roy Thrives in Music Thanks to YouTube Success with "Keeping Me Alive"

Jonathan Roy is living proof that the digital age has transformed the music industry. With the rise of platforms like YouTube, musicians can now connect with fans and sustain their careers in ways that were once unimaginable. Roy, who shot to prominence with his 2019 hit "Keeping Me Alive," is enjoying the benefits of his 137 million views on the video, and it’s paying off in more ways than one.

When asked how much he’s earned from those views, the singer hesitates before admitting, "It’s definitely paying off." While he doesn't reveal exact numbers, Roy acknowledges that the income from streaming platforms like YouTube and Apple Music is substantial enough to allow him to continue making music. For someone like Roy, who ventured out as an independent artist after parting ways with Warner, this has been a game-changer. Despite the financial success, Roy remains humble and focused on his passion. "I could probably survive without touring just on the royalties," he says, but adds with a smile, "I love performing too much to stay off stage."

2025 will see Roy on a busy tour, with about fifty performances scheduled in Quebec, as well as a stint in the United States in April. His 2024 European tour was particularly eye-opening, as he discovered a dedicated fanbase in Eastern Europe, notably in countries like Bulgaria. Performing in Sofia, he was amazed to find a crowd of 1,000 fans, many of whom were holding up flags and drawings. What excited him even more was the fact that these fans knew his music from platforms like YouTube and Spotify – without the influence of his famous father, hockey legend Patrick Roy. "No one cares who my father is. They’re here because they love the music," Roy reflects.

As for his upcoming album, Symphony of Doubts , Roy has opted for a unique release strategy. Instead of dropping the entire album at once, he’s releasing it in two parts. He hopes this will allow fans to truly absorb the music and listen to each track in full. “Imagine if I released a song every week; people would have time to really get to know the sound of the album,” he says. The first six tracks were released before the holidays, with the second half of the album dropping on February 28. One of the singles, “Waiting For A Call,” is already showing positive results on YouTube with almost half a million views.

Despite his digital success, Roy remains deeply committed to the live performance aspect of his career. Whether on stage in Quebec or abroad, he thrives on the connection with his audience. Fans can look forward to seeing him live at the MTELUS in Montreal on February 27 and at the Grand Thé'stre de Québec on March 1. For Jonathan Roy, the journey is just beginning, and with his passion for music and live performances, he’s sure to continue making waves in the industry.
