Lorenzo Musetti on Djokovic's Threat and Sinner's Rise at Hong Kong Open
Lorenzo Musetti, the rising star of Italian tennis, recently shared his insights at the Hong Kong Tennis Open, capturing attention with both his remarks and his fresh look for the new season. While reflecting on his 2024 campaign and the shifting dynamics of professional tennis, Musetti emphasized that Novak Djokovic remains a formidable force despite challenges, while Jannik Sinner has solidified his status as the man to beat.
Musetti, currently ranked world No. 17, acknowledged Djokovic’s unmatched experience and ability on grand slam courts. Although Djokovic, now 37, didn’t secure a major title in 2024—marking the first time since 2017—his record 24 grand slam victories and unparalleled mental toughness make him a perpetual contender. Musetti noted, “Novak is a danger for everybody. His physical condition might fluctuate, but his mastery of grand slam conditions keeps him in the hunt.”

Turning his focus to Sinner, Musetti lauded his compatriot and current world No. 1 for an extraordinary 2024 season. Sinner's rise has been meteoric, thanks to his consistency and dominance across the ATP circuit. Musetti declared, “Last year, Jannik showed he was one step ahead of everyone else. He had an incredible season.”
Musetti himself enjoyed a breakout year in 2024, reaching three tour finals, the Wimbledon semi-finals, and clinching an Olympic bronze medal. Although he fell short against Djokovic in key matches—including at Wimbledon and the French Open—these experiences have only sharpened his resolve to break through in 2025.
Beyond the court, Musetti is embracing change. He debuted a new partnership with Asics at the Hong Kong Open, showcasing an all-purple kit and charcoal shoes, marking the end of his longstanding association with Nike. Adding to the buzz, the Italian sported a drastically shorter haircut—a transformation he credits to his girlfriend, Veronica Confalonieri. “New year, new look,” he quipped after a strong opening match victory.
As Musetti aims for his first ATP title since 2022, he remains focused on growth and adaptability. With Djokovic's enduring threat and Sinner’s ascent, the tennis landscape is brimming with intrigue—and Musetti is determined to carve his own legacy within it.
