Mitch Owen Shines as Hurricanes Claim Historic BBL Victory
The 2024/25 Big Bash League final in Hobart delivered an unforgettable clash as the Hobart Hurricanes claimed their first-ever title, defeating the Sydney Thunder by seven wickets. The spotlight was firmly on Mitch Owen, whose blistering century not only powered his team to victory but cemented his status as a breakout star.
Mitch Owen’s innings was nothing short of spectacular. Coming in as an opener, he blazed his way to 108 runs off just 42 balls, equaling the BBL record for the fastest century in a final with a 39-ball ton. With an extraordinary strike rate of over 250, Owen showcased impeccable timing, raw power, and a fearless attitude. His performance electrified the Hobart crowd, who roared with every boundary and six he smashed.
The Hurricanes, historically one of only two teams never to win the BBL, were dominant throughout the season. Though their campaign began shakily with a lowly total of 74 against the Melbourne Renegades, they rebounded with an eight-match unbeaten streak. Their strength lay in a well-rounded team, featuring an explosive batting lineup and a lethal pace attack led by Nathan Ellis and Chris Jordan. Owen’s consistent brilliance at the top of the order and Tim David’s finishing ability in the middle were key to their success.

Sydney Thunder, captained by the seasoned David Warner, came into the final riding a wave of resilience. After finishing third in the standings, they fought their way through the playoffs, overcoming setbacks like injuries and the harrowing mid-season collision involving Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams. Warner, fresh from the lifting of his captaincy ban, was on the cusp of a fairytale comeback. Unfortunately for Thunder fans, the Hurricanes proved too formidable.
The final itself was a one-sided affair once Owen took control. Thunder’s bowlers, including spinners like Tanveer Sangha, were left shell-shocked by Owen’s onslaught. Despite Sangha’s decent form in the lead-up, the small boundaries of Hobart’s home ground were no match for the hurricane that was Mitch Owen.
Reflecting on his performance, Owen described the night as a dream come true. "It was special to do this in front of my family and friends. The crowd’s energy really lifted me," he said post-match.
With this victory, the Hurricanes have not only etched their name in BBL history but also set the stage for a thrilling era of cricket in Hobart. The Thunder, on the other hand, will take heart from their remarkable turnaround this season and look ahead with hope.
This final will undoubtedly be remembered as the night Mitch Owen stole the show and made Hobart Hurricanes the kings of the Big Bash League.
