Mother Used as Human Shield in Brazen Bronx Shooting Incident

On Monday evening, a terrifying scene unfolded at a Bronx convenience store when two gunmen unleashed a hail of bullets, injuring six people, including a mother and her 12-year-old daughter. The incident, which took place around 5 p.m. at 3544 White Plains Road in the Williamsbridge neighborhood, was described by police as a heartless and brazen attack with no regard for human life.

The violence began when two suspects targeted a group of men outside the store, opening fire in broad daylight. As the intended targets fled into the convenience store to escape the onslaught, one of them made a chilling decision. To shield himself from the bullets, he turned a 40-year-old mother—who was at the counter with her young daughter—into a human shield. Tragically, the mother was struck in the stomach, and her daughter sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.

Inside the store, chaos erupted. Shattered glass and panicked screams filled the air as bullets continued to fly. Witness Beverly Taylor, who was nearby, recounted the harrowing moments: "I heard 10 to 15 shots and just dropped to the ground." Other bystanders described the area as crowded and chaotic, with no immediate indication of where the gunfire was coming from.

Four additional victims—young men aged 18 to 21—were also wounded in the arms and legs during the attack. Thankfully, all six victims are expected to recover. The NYPD, however, remains on high alert, actively searching for the two suspects, who were last seen fleeing north on White Plains Road. Both wore face masks; one donned a black Nike sweatshirt, while the other wore a gray hoodie.

Interim Chief of Department John Chell condemned the actions of the shooters and the callousness of using an innocent mother as a shield. “This was a brazen attack, and whoever carried it out had no regard for human life,” he stated.

Local residents are rattled, calling for better safety measures. Witnesses and community members describe the area as increasingly unsafe, particularly after dark, with concerns over gang-related activity and rising violence.

As police continue their investigation, the community remains on edge, grappling with the shock of this violent episode in their neighborhood. Anyone with information is urged to contact the NYPD’s tip line at 1-800-577-TIPS.
