Newcastle Jets Turn to Bowling for a Fresh Start in Challenging Season

Amid a challenging A-League Women’s campaign, the Newcastle Jets have taken a creative and refreshing approach to team-building—ten-pin bowling. Sitting 10th on the ladder with only 10 points from 11 games, the Jets needed a morale boost, and this unconventional training session at Warners Bay seemed to do the trick.

Claudia Cicco, one of the players, shared her thoughts on the outing. "It was a lot of fun, and there are some decent bowlers in the team," she said with a laugh. "But I think we’ll stick to soccer." Similarly, teammate Josie Allan admitted her bowling skills left something to be desired but emphasized the importance of bonding moments like these. "It was good fun, and hopefully, it brings us together a bit more. It felt like a nice reset," she added.

The Jets’ coach, Ryan Campbell, highlighted the importance of stepping away from the grind, especially during a taxing stretch where the team played three matches in just nine days. Campbell explained how the activity served as a way to refocus and reignite the team’s spirit. "We hit the middle point of the season, which is a great time to reassess our goals and set a new tone. A bit of friendly competition off the field never hurts," he said.

Despite the light-hearted nature of the activity, the team remains acutely aware of the challenges ahead. With 12 games remaining, they are six points shy of a top-six spot. Crucially, upcoming matches against teams like Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners, both holding 16 points, offer the Jets a chance to climb the ladder.

The return of key players, including Matildas defender Tash Prior and forward Sheridan Gallagher, could also bolster the team’s chances. Gallagher, who showcased her natural athleticism during the bowling session, is expected to play a pivotal role in the Jets’ pursuit of a finals berth.

Campbell is optimistic about the impact of the bowling session on the team’s dynamics and performance. "We want to be a finals team, and we’re not happy with our current standing. This activity gave us a fresh perspective, and now it’s time to bring that energy to the field," he stated.

As the Jets prepare for a crucial matchup against Wellington Phoenix, their unconventional bonding session might just prove to be the catalyst for a season turnaround. Whether it’s on the pitch or at the bowling alley, one thing is clear—the Jets are determined to strike their way to success.
