NHL Delivers Justice with Equal Suspensions for McDavid and Myers
In a rare moment of agreement among hockey fans, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety (DoPS) got it right by suspending both Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid and Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers for three games each. The decision, made after intense scrutiny of their actions in a heated game last Saturday, reflects a balanced and fair approach to handling dangerous play on the ice.
The incidents unfolded late in the game, with just 2.3 seconds left on the clock. McDavid, frustrated after being repeatedly held and interfered with by Conor Garland, lashed out with a crosscheck to Garland’s head. Meanwhile, Myers delivered a forceful crosscheck to Evan Bouchard’s face during the ensuing chaos. Both incidents, intentional and away from the puck, crossed the line of acceptable conduct in hockey.

McDavid, a superstar and face of the league, rarely finds himself in disciplinary trouble. However, the DoPS highlighted his deliberate actions, noting that he drew back his stick with both hands and struck Garland’s head with force—far from a reflex or accidental play. Myers, while defending his actions by claiming Bouchard’s movements redirected his stick, faced criticism as the footage clearly showed an intentional blow delivered after the whistle.
The equal suspensions send a powerful message: no player, regardless of their status, is above accountability. The three-game ban also removes both players from the teams’ highly anticipated rematch on Thursday, likely a strategic move to prevent further escalation. While fans of the Oilers may argue Garland’s interference on McDavid warranted some leniency, and Canucks supporters might contest the circumstances of Myers’ actions, the DoPS made a strong and commendable call.
While officiating lapses contributed to the tension that led to these incidents, the NHL’s response sets an example for maintaining safety and discipline in the sport. With these suspensions, the league reinforces that respect for fellow players and responsibility for one’s actions remain non-negotiable.
