Nintendo Breaks Silence on Leaked Switch 2 Hardware and Genki's CES Mockup
In an unexpected twist to the ongoing speculation about the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, the company has issued its first official response to the rumors surrounding a leaked mockup showcased at CES 2025. For those who may have missed it, peripheral maker Genki displayed a physical prototype of what it claims is the upcoming next-gen Nintendo console at the annual tech event. Along with the physical model, they also released a detailed video render to highlight the accessories they plan to launch for the console.
However, the situation became even more curious when Genki stated that the model was based on information obtained through the black market. This bold claim about sourcing real hardware from unofficial channels immediately caught the attention of gamers and tech enthusiasts. Genki even confirmed to media outlets like Numerama that their products were developed from "molds" of what they believed to be a legitimate version of the Switch 2.

But today, Nintendo has finally spoken up, putting an end to this growing speculation. In a statement to CNET Japan, the gaming giant was quick to clarify that the hardware shown by Genki was "unofficial" and that they had not provided the company with any physical Switch 2 units. Similarly, Nintendo's response to the Japanese news outlet Senkei echoed these comments, emphasizing that the mockup and renders presented at CES were not authorized or created by Nintendo.
What's most interesting, however, is what Nintendo didn’t say. The company refrained from outright denying the appearance of the console as depicted in Genki's mockup, nor did it challenge the accuracy of the leaked assets from other sources such as OnLeaks and 91Mobile. Given Nintendo's reputation for being protective of its intellectual property and its history of aggressively pursuing legal action against leaks, this silence is quite telling.
Though the official Switch 2 reveal has yet to occur, it’s now clear that Nintendo is aware of the mounting leaks and rumors, and many believe the company is preparing to accelerate its marketing efforts. Some experts even speculate that we could see a formal announcement as early as this month, perhaps through a Nintendo Direct.
For now, gamers will have to keep guessing, but with such cryptic responses, it’s evident that the mystery of the Switch 2 is far from over. The questions surrounding the next-gen console continue to grow, and Nintendo's delicate handling of these leaks only adds to the excitement and intrigue. As we move further into 2025, all eyes will be on the official launch of the Switch 2, whenever that may be.
