Notre Dame Shocks Georgia with Sugar Bowl Victory, Secures College Football Playoff Semifinal Spot
In a thrilling and emotional Sugar Bowl, Notre Dame delivered a stunning 23-10 victory over second-seeded Georgia, propelling the Fighting Irish into the College Football Playoff (CFP) semifinals. The game, played in New Orleans, was held under a cloud of sadness following a devastating attack on New Year’s revelers, which claimed 14 lives and injured many more. Despite the somber backdrop, Notre Dame managed to deliver a performance that not only stunned their opponents but also set the stage for a matchup against Penn State in the upcoming Orange Bowl.
The contest began with both teams struggling to find their rhythm, with defensive dominance dictating the early minutes. Georgia’s punter was hit twice on consecutive punts in the first quarter by the same Notre Dame defender, setting the tone for what would be a punishing defensive battle. The game remained scoreless for much of the first half, with both teams only managing field goals to keep the score tied at 3-3.

However, the key moment of the game came just before halftime. Notre Dame kicker Mitch Jeter nailed a 48-yard field goal with just 39 seconds remaining in the second quarter, giving the Irish a 6-3 lead. On the very next play, the Irish defense struck—defensive lineman RJ Oben strip-sacked Georgia’s quarterback Gunner Stockton, and Notre Dame recovered the fumble, setting up excellent field position. Riley Leonard, Notre Dame's quarterback, wasted no time, delivering a 13-yard touchdown pass to Beaux Collins, extending the lead to 13-3 as the teams headed into the locker room.
But Notre Dame wasn’t done yet. In a breathtaking display of speed and precision, wide receiver Jayden Harrison returned the second-half kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. That lightning-fast 17-point burst, which took only 54 seconds of actual game time, effectively sealed the fate of the Bulldogs.
Georgia mounted a response in the second half, with Stockton, filling in for an injured Carson Beck, throwing for 234 yards and a touchdown. The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 20-10 with a 32-yard touchdown pass to running back Cash Jones. But Notre Dame's defense remained steadfast, limiting Georgia's scoring chances and holding off any further threats. The Irish tacked on a field goal in the fourth quarter to bring the final score to 23-10.
Notre Dame's head coach Marcus Freeman praised his team's performance in all three phases of the game—offense, defense, and special teams—while acknowledging the emotional toll the city of New Orleans had endured in the wake of the tragedy. Despite the emotional weight of the game, Freeman’s squad remained focused and executed their game plan with precision.
With this victory, Notre Dame secured its 13th win of the season, the most in the program's storied history, and is now just two games away from a national title. As the College Football Playoff semifinals draw closer, fans are eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this historic season.
