Rebuilding Hope with Affordable Housing for Swannanoa's Helene Victims
In the wake of Tropical Storm Helene, which devastated communities across Western North Carolina, one nonprofit is leading the way in offering a beacon of hope to families who lost everything. Beloved Asheville, a community-driven organization, is taking monumental steps to help victims of the storm by creating deeply affordable housing in Swannanoa. Their latest project aims to build a village of homes that will offer shelter and stability to those most impacted.
Beloved Asheville has already purchased nearly 9 acres of land in a non-flood zone, just south of Interstate 40, where they plan to construct at least 15 homes. This effort is particularly significant as the new village is located across from the hardest-hit areas in Swannanoa, where many families were left homeless after Helene’s fury. Co-Director Amy Cantrell emphasized how powerful this project is in the context of healing, noting that it symbolizes hope for the families that lost everything.

These homes will not just be a temporary solution—they are intended to provide lasting, affordable housing for individuals and families who are struggling the most. With many families earning 15% to 50% of the area median income, the new homes will be priced to ensure they are affordable for generations to come. The homes will be aimed at helping those who are elders on fixed incomes, essential workers, and families facing the harsh realities of housing insecurity.
The nonprofit’s mission is rooted in the belief that community support can rebuild from the rubble. As they rally resources, Beloved Asheville has already garnered community donations, including materials and skilled volunteers, to help make this vision a reality. They are committed to completing the village by the end of 2025, ensuring that the families who need it most have a safe and affordable place to call home.
For many, this village is not just about construction—it’s about rebuilding lives. Co-Director Ponkho Bermejo shared that the community has been hit hard, with individuals now living in temporary shelters like tents and RVs. By offering affordable housing, Beloved Asheville is offering these families a foundation to start anew.
This project is part of a larger movement to address the housing crisis in Asheville, a city already grappling with affordability issues before the storm. While Beloved Asheville is focusing on immediate relief, their long-term goal is to create more of these villages, transforming the way affordable housing is approached in the region.
The efforts in Swannanoa are a powerful reminder that, with compassion, dedication, and community support, even the greatest tragedies can give rise to new beginnings. As the village in Swannanoa begins to take shape, it’s clear that this project represents not just bricks and mortar, but a collective promise of resilience and hope for the future.
