
Royal Navy Shadows Russian Warships Near UK Coast Over Christmas
HMS Somerset, a Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, undertook a high-stakes mission during the Christmas holidays, tracking a Russian naval group that included the corvette RFS Soobrazitelny and two support ships, MV Sparta II and MV General Skobelev, as they traversed the English Channel. This operation, lasting five days, showcased the Royal Navy’s unyielding commitment to safeguarding the UK’s territorial waters, even during festive periods.
The deployment began when HMS Somerset’s nearly 200-strong crew was recalled on Christmas Day. The ship set sail from Devonport on December 27, 2024, to shadow the Russian vessels as they journeyed through international waters near the UK. Despite the challenging weather conditions in the North Sea and the Channel, HMS Somerset maintained a vigilant watch, employing advanced sensors to ensure comprehensive monitoring.

The operation was further supported by a Merlin helicopter from the 814 Naval Air Squadron at RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall. The helicopter’s aerial surveillance provided vital intelligence, capturing imagery of the Russian vessels and contributing to the Royal Navy’s situational awareness.
Commander Joel Roberts, HMS Somerset’s commanding officer, highlighted the importance of the mission, stating, “As the UK is an island nation, the Royal Navy stands ready year-round to protect national interests. Maintaining maritime security, deterring malign activities, and upholding maritime law are integral to our strategy.”
Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard commended the crew’s professionalism and dedication, emphasizing the importance of their swift action in ensuring the UK’s safety during the holiday period. The mission underscores the Royal Navy’s capacity for rapid response and its critical role in maintaining maritime security.
