Steven Fletcher's Late Strike Seals Vital Win for Wrexham Against Peterborough
Wrexham's promotion hopes in League One are well and truly alive after a thrilling 1-0 victory over Peterborough United, thanks to a dramatic late goal by Steven Fletcher. After suffering a surprising defeat to Barnsley on New Year's Day, the Red Dragons needed a win to maintain their push for the top of the table, and they got exactly that with Fletcher’s late intervention.
The match had been a tense affair, with Peterborough holding firm for nearly 90 minutes. As the clock ticked down, it looked like Wrexham would be forced to settle for a draw. However, the evergreen Fletcher, a reliable figure off the bench, had other plans. Coming on in the 60th minute, Fletcher wasted no time in making his mark, scoring the only goal of the match in the 87th minute. A perfect cross from Oliver Rathbone on the left found Fletcher, who rose above the Peterborough defense to head the ball past the diving goalkeeper. It was a goal that sent the home crowd into raptures and gave Wrexham three crucial points.

This goal marks Fletcher’s fifth of the season as a substitute, and it’s yet another example of his knack for coming through when his team needs him most. In fact, this is the third time in Wrexham's last four matches that Fletcher has delivered a late winner. From his penalty in the dying moments against Blackpool to his stoppage-time strike against Wigan, Fletcher has become a crucial part of Wrexham's attacking options, particularly when Paul Mullin has been unable to find the back of the net.
Wrexham's victory against Peterborough is vital in keeping the pressure on Wycombe Wanderers and Birmingham City in the race for promotion. With both teams sitting on 51 points, the win means Wrexham are now level with Wycombe, just two points behind Birmingham, and very much in the hunt for a place in the Championship.
The result was a much-needed confidence boost for manager Phil Parkinson’s side, who had been left frustrated after their unexpected defeat to Barnsley. Wrexham showed resilience in the face of a tough opponent, and with players like Fletcher in the squad, their promotion push looks stronger than ever. The Red Dragons will look to build on this momentum as they aim to finish the season strongly and secure a spot in the top two.
