Suzuki's Overtime Heroics Lead Canadiens to Victory in Washington
The Montreal Canadiens continue to show resilience as they battle their way through a competitive season. In a thrilling game against the Washington Capitals, Nick Suzuki once again proved why he’s the captain, scoring in overtime to seal a hard-fought 3-2 victory. This marks Suzuki’s second consecutive game where he played the hero in extra time, sending the Canadiens home with two crucial points.
The game was a display of grit and determination from the Canadiens, who faced the top team in the Eastern Conference. Suzuki’s game-winning goal came just 1:15 into the overtime period, with a perfect high shot that beat Capitals goalie Logan Thompson. The play was set up by a brilliant defensive move from Lane Hutson, who intercepted a cross-ice pass during a two-on-one rush from Washington, demonstrating his skill on both ends of the ice. Hutson's defensive prowess was a key factor throughout the game, with Montreal maintaining strong defensive coverage.
Jakub Dobes, the 23-year-old Czech goalie, was once again solid between the pipes, stopping 15 shots to help his team secure the win. Dobes has now remained undefeated in his three NHL starts, and he made several key saves, including a stop on Alexander Ovechkin's one-timer during a Capitals power play. For Dobes, it was a surreal moment to face one of his idols and stop a shot from the legendary Ovechkin. “It’s a dream come true,” Dobes said after the game. "I can’t describe the feeling of facing players I’ve admired since I was a kid."

The Canadiens' defense was also impressive, limiting Washington’s scoring chances while staying disciplined. As Dobes mentioned, their solid structure was crucial, especially when they avoided taking penalties. Montreal's penalty kill continued to perform well, with key contributions from both Hutson and the forwards. Cole Caufield also had an impact on the scoreboard, adding a goal and an assist, while Josh Anderson scored as well. This win marked their third consecutive victory, showing that Montreal is trending upward after a somewhat slow start to the season.
In the first period, the Canadiens faced some adversity after a penalty from Michael Pezzetta gave Washington the chance to take the lead. Jakob Chychrun capitalized on a defensive turnover and fired a quick shot past Dobes to give the Capitals the advantage. But the Canadiens didn’t back down, fighting back with goals from Caufield and Anderson in the second period, the latter coming shorthanded. Despite some strong saves from Thompson, the Capitals equalized early in the third period thanks to a quick play from Ethen Frank and Lars Eller.
However, despite the Capitals’ pressure, the Canadiens regained control as the game wore on. Dobes was there when it mattered, making critical stops on Taylor Raddysh in the dying moments of regulation. Then, Suzuki stepped up in overtime, scoring the game-winning goal and sending the Canadiens to another hard-earned victory.
This victory is another testament to the team’s growing confidence and cohesion. Montreal has now won 9 of its last 11 games, and with each passing match, they continue to prove they are a team that can compete with the best in the league. Head coach Martin St-Louis emphasized the importance of the team’s collective effort, noting that everyone is contributing and playing to their strengths.
Looking ahead, the Canadiens are gearing up for their next game against the Dallas Stars. They will aim to continue their winning streak and further solidify their position in the standings as they continue to fight for a playoff spot.
