Tottenham's Shock Interest in Jack Grealish Amid Concerns Over Man City Career

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing a surprise January move for Manchester City winger Jack Grealish, a transfer that could see them replicate a controversial Arsenal deal from last summer. The 29-year-old, who made headlines in 2021 when City splashed a record £100 million to bring him from Aston Villa, has struggled to meet expectations in Manchester. Despite winning multiple trophies with the club, including the Premier League and Champions League, Grealish's individual performances have often fallen short of the lofty standards expected of a player with such a hefty price tag.

In over three years at the Etihad, Grealish has scored just 14 goals and contributed 20 assists in 143 appearances. These figures pale in comparison to those of other top players, with Mohamed Salah’s tally of 37 goal contributions this season alone surpassing Grealish's total over the past few seasons. In fact, Grealish hasn’t found the back of the net in over a year, with his last goal coming in December 2023 against Crystal Palace. This dip in form has raised questions about his future, especially as he has struggled to maintain a regular spot in both Manchester City's starting lineup and the England squad.

As Grealish faces a period of uncertainty at City, both Tottenham and Newcastle United are said to be monitoring his situation closely. The idea of him moving to Spurs has gained traction in recent reports, with suggestions that a loan deal could be on the cards. City, who are likely to make significant moves in the winter transfer window, may be open to such a deal in order to reduce their wage bill and shift out a player who has not been performing to expectations.

However, any move would be complicated by Grealish's eye-watering £300,000-a-week salary. Reports indicate that Tottenham could insist on City continuing to subsidize a significant portion of that wage in order to make the deal feasible. This potential structure mirrors the deal Arsenal struck with Chelsea for Raheem Sterling last summer, where the Blues continued to pay a large chunk of Sterling’s salary during his loan spell. That deal, though, has been met with mixed results, as Sterling has failed to make a major impact at the Emirates. Given Grealish's own struggles, there’s no guarantee he would fare any better at Spurs.

Despite his challenges, Grealish’s talents have never been in doubt. His creativity and dribbling ability make him an attractive option for clubs seeking to strengthen their attack. Tottenham, in particular, are reportedly keen to bolster their wing positions in January, and the addition of Grealish, even on loan, could give them the flexibility to focus on other pressing areas, such as central defense and striker depth.

Ultimately, while Grealish’s future at Manchester City appears uncertain, the prospect of him moving to Tottenham is an intriguing one. However, as with any loan deal, there’s a risk that the move may not solve the problems both for Grealish and for Spurs, leaving questions about whether he can rediscover his best form elsewhere. Nonetheless, it’s clear that his time at City may be nearing its end, with both him and the club seemingly at a crossroads.
