Trump Jr. Heads to Greenland Amid Renewed Calls for U.S. Ownership
Donald Trump Jr. is set to visit Greenland, just two weeks after his father, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, once again expressed his desire for the U.S. to take control of the autonomous Danish territory. The younger Trump is expected to embark on a one-day, private trip to the Arctic island to explore its spectacular sights and capture footage for a podcast, according to U.S. media reports.
This visit comes after President-elect Trump reignited the controversy surrounding Greenland's potential acquisition. In a statement last month, Trump declared that Greenland's "ownership and control" are crucial for U.S. national security. He emphasized that it is an "absolute necessity" for the U.S. to have authority over the island. Trump had previously proposed purchasing Greenland during his first term, but the suggestion was met with rejection by Greenland's leadership, which firmly stated that the island is not for sale. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, reiterated in December that the territory "will never be for sale," asserting that "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland."

Despite this, the President-elect's post on Truth Social included a video clip featuring a man wearing a red "Make America Great Again" hat, who encouraged Trump to buy Greenland and "free it from being colonized by Denmark." Trump Jr.'s visit, however, is not an official diplomatic mission. The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the trip is private and that they would not be commenting further. According to sources, Trump Jr. and his entourage will be touring some of Greenland's most majestic locations while also working on content for his podcast.
Trump's interest in Greenland is not new. His administration’s desire to control the island has sparked discussions about its strategic value. Greenland sits on the shortest route between North America and Europe and hosts a significant U.S. military base, Thule Air Base, which plays a critical role in U.S. defense. These factors, along with the island’s vast natural resources, contribute to its geopolitical significance.
This notion of acquiring Greenland echoes past U.S. proposals. In fact, President Harry Truman had considered purchasing Greenland in the 1940s, and earlier, in the 1860s, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward expressed interest in acquiring the island. Trump's repeated calls for U.S. control have sparked strong responses from Greenland's leaders, including Prime Minister Egede's recent statements on independence from Denmark. In his New Year’s address, Egede stressed that Greenland must "break free from the shackles of colonialism," a statement that reflects growing tensions regarding the island's relationship with Denmark.
In the same vein, Denmark has recently increased its defense spending in Greenland, which some interpret as a response to Trump’s repeated comments. Additionally, King Frederik X of Denmark made symbolic changes to the royal coat of arms, giving greater prominence to Greenland and the Faroe Islands. This move has been seen by some as a statement of unity within the Kingdom of Denmark, although it may also stoke tensions with Greenland's growing independence movement.
Amid this political backdrop, Trump Jr.'s visit highlights ongoing debates about Greenland's future. While the island’s people and leaders remain firm in their stance against foreign control, the issue continues to capture attention, especially given the island’s strategic importance in the Arctic. As the U.S. prepares for a potential shift in political leadership, the question of whether Greenland will ever fall under U.S. jurisdiction remains unresolved, leaving room for further diplomatic and geopolitical developments.
