Weather Warnings Lead to Cancellations of New Year's Celebrations in Wales
As we welcome 2025, the weather in Wales is creating disruptions that have affected several New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations. Due to the harsh conditions forecasted for the region, including strong winds and heavy rainfall, some events have been either cancelled or significantly altered for safety reasons.
The Met Office issued a yellow wind warning for Wales, alerting residents to expect powerful gusts reaching speeds of up to 75mph starting on New Year's Day at 9:00 AM, lasting through to Thursday morning. This warning has prompted various communities to rethink their planned activities, especially those set near the coast or in exposed areas.
Many New Year's Day swims across Wales, which are popular annual traditions, have been called off. Locations such as Newport, St. Davids, Haverfordwest, and Porthdinllaen in Gwynedd have cancelled their usual events. The safety of participants is the top priority, and the local RNLI has also suspended its annual dip in Porthdinllaen due to the dangerous weather conditions.

However, the New Year's Day dip at Barry Island in the Vale of Glamorgan is still scheduled to take place, but with a word of caution. Event organizers have advised swimmers not to fully enter the sea due to the turbulent conditions. Attendees are encouraged to judge the situation for themselves, keeping safety as the number one concern.
Firework displays in some towns have also been impacted. The fireworks to mark the 1,500-year anniversary of Bangor's founding, as well as the show in Beaumaris on Anglesey, have been cancelled due to the risk posed by the weather.
The weather system affecting Wales brings not only strong winds but also significant rainfall, raising concerns about potential flooding, particularly in the northern and central parts of the country. Flood alerts have been issued for river catchment areas in places like Conwy, Dyfi, Powys, Clwyd, and Alyn. The local authorities have also warned people to avoid travelling to forests or nature reserves where the risk of falling trees is high due to the stormy weather.
In addition to these cancellations, transportation services across Wales are likely to face disruptions. Train services and road traffic may experience delays or last-minute cancellations as the storm system moves through. Transport for Wales has urged travelers to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and travel alerts before heading out, particularly those planning on using public transport.
Despite these challenges, many in Wales are still determined to ring in the New Year. Whether it’s through cautious swims or by staying indoors and watching the fireworks from the comfort of their homes, people are finding ways to adapt. However, the message remains clear: stay safe, stay informed, and be prepared for the unpredictable weather that continues to impact New Year's celebrations across Wales.
