Winter Storm Leaves Hazardous Roads and Bitter Cold Across Georgia
Good evening, everyone. As we navigate this challenging weather situation, here’s what you need to know to stay safe. The Winter Storm Warning for parts of metro Atlanta officially expired this morning at 7 a.m., but the danger hasn’t subsided. Snow and ice continue to create treacherous road conditions across much of Georgia, particularly along and south of I-85. State officials are urging everyone to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
This morning, temperatures dropped to bitter levels, with wind chills reaching single digits across north Georgia. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect, so if you have to head out, bundle up and be cautious. Governor Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency, lasting through next Tuesday, to ensure resources are available to manage the ongoing challenges.

The conditions are impacting daily life in many ways. From flight cancellations and delays at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to school closings and suspended MARTA services, the effects are widespread. In fact, over 1,800 service calls were reported in Gwinnett County alone in just a 24-hour period, including hundreds of accidents. Officials are warning that icy patches on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas will persist, even as crews work tirelessly to treat and clear roadways.
To support those affected, warming centers have been opened in several locations, including Atlanta and DeKalb County. These facilities are crucial for residents without adequate heating, and they remain available through Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, city and state officials continue to monitor the situation, prioritizing the safety of residents.
As we look ahead, the sunshine today might provide a brief thaw, but freezing temperatures overnight will likely cause refreezing, making roads hazardous again tomorrow. Remember, even treated roads can be dangerous, so avoid driving unless it’s absolutely necessary.
Stay tuned to weather updates, check with airlines before heading to the airport, and, most importantly, stay safe. Let’s all do our part to ensure this storm passes with as little harm as possible. Stay warm, Georgia!
