Atlético Madrid Dominates Getafe in Copa del Rey Quarterfinals, Strong Performance Sees Them Lead 3-0 at Halftime
In a high-paced and dominant performance, Atlético Madrid are all but assured of a semifinal spot in the Copa del Rey after a remarkable 3-0 lead over Getafe at the break. The game, which has been played at the Metropolitano Stadium, has seen the home side utterly dismantle Getafe, and the scoreline tells the story.
Giuliano Simeone has been the standout player for Atlético Madrid, netting two goals in a quick span. The first goal came early in the match, in the 7th minute, when Simeone outjumped Getafe defender Bernat to meet a perfect cross from Javi Galán. His header, despite a slip from Bernat, gave Atlético an early advantage. Just nine minutes later, in the 16th minute, Giuliano struck again, this time with a superb first-time shot from outside the box, set up by a clever pass from Rodrigo De Paul.

Getafe, on the other hand, has been on the backfoot since the start. Their defensive disarray was clear in the first half, with multiple chances created by Atlético’s high pressing and quick ball recovery. Their goalkeeper, Letácek, made a couple of vital saves, particularly denying Griezmann and Samu Lino, but despite these interventions, the visitors have struggled to contain the onslaught from Atlético.
By the 41st minute, Atlético’s dominance was sealed when Samu Lino made it 3-0. A swift break saw Giuliano slide a pass through to Julián Alvarez, who, instead of taking the shot himself, cleverly passed to Lino, who finished calmly. The crowd was jubilant, and the game seemed over as the first half came to a close.
The one bright spot for Getafe came just before halftime when Uche had a chance to pull one back after a mix-up in the Atlético defense, but his shot went high, leaving the score unchanged at 3-0.
At the break, Getafe has had very little to offer offensively, with only a handful of half-chances. Atlético has controlled possession with 53%, and their sharp passing and intelligent movement have left Getafe unable to break down their defensive shape. As the second half begins, the question remains whether Atlético will maintain their lead and secure their place in the next round or if Getafe can stage an unlikely comeback.
