Atlético Madrid Stumble Again as Celta Vigo Snatch a Point
Atlético Madrid had another frustrating night at the Metropolitano, dropping two crucial points in a 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo. With Real Madrid having slipped up earlier, this was a golden opportunity for Diego Simeone’s side to close the gap in LaLiga, but a series of errors cost them dearly.
The match started disastrously for Atlético, as Pablo Barrios saw red in just the 7th minute after a reckless tackle on Pablo Durán. Playing nearly the entire game with 10 men was always going to be an uphill battle, and Celta Vigo took full advantage. The visitors dominated possession, forcing Atlético to sit deep and absorb pressure.

Despite being a man down, Atlético showed resilience. José María Giménez stood strong at the back, breaking up Celta’s attacks and even providing the assist for their only goal. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak had little to do for most of the match, but he was sent the wrong way when Iago Aspas coolly converted a 67th-minute penalty. The spot-kick was awarded after Robin Le Normand’s careless foul on Borja Iglesias—an avoidable mistake that summed up Atleti’s night.
Atlético, however, refused to go down without a fight. In the 81st minute, Giménez launched a long ball forward to Alexander Sørloth, who outmuscled Carl Starfelt before slotting home the equalizer. The Norwegian striker’s physicality and composure gave Atlético a lifeline, but it wasn’t enough to secure all three points.
The draw leaves Atlético trailing behind Real Madrid in the title race. With LaLiga reaching its crucial stages, every dropped point feels like a missed opportunity. Simeone’s side must cut out these individual mistakes if they are to mount a serious challenge for the trophy.
One thing is clear—if Atlético want to stay in the race, they cannot afford many more nights like this.
