Even heavy rain couldn’t keep the stars away from the highly anticipated Los Angeles premiere of Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends . The Ahmanson Theatre was packed with Broadway legends, Hollywood insiders, and devoted theatre lovers, all eager to witness an unforgettable night celebrating the legacy of the late Stephen Sondheim. And at the heart of it all? The one and only Bernadette Peters, delivering a performance that left the audience in awe.
Peters, a longtime muse of Sondheim, was joined by the incredible Lea Salonga and a stellar cast of Broadway veterans. The show, originally staged in London’s West End, made its North American debut in LA before heading to Broadway in April. It’s being hailed as a grand tribute to Sondheim’s work, blending iconic songs, heartfelt performances, and a touch of nostalgia that left the audience both enchanted and emotional.

Despite the downpour outside, the theatre was buzzing with excitement. Spotted in the audience were Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ashley Park, and Andrew Rannells, along with top producers and industry figures, all eager to experience the magic. And the production did not disappoint. From the opening number to the final bow, Old Friends delivered hit after hit, with Peters’ breathtaking rendition of Send in the Clowns drawing one of the night’s biggest ovations. Salonga also stunned with Somewhere , while the ensemble shined in classics like Broadway Baby and Being Alive .
This production holds special significance, as it was a project born from Sondheim’s long friendship with producer Cameron Mackintosh. Originally planned as the third revue of Sondheim’s work, the show took shape during the pandemic. Though Sondheim’s passing in 2021 left an irreplaceable void, his spirit was palpable throughout the night. Directors Matthew Bourne and Julia McKenzie, along with choreographer Stephen Mear and an outstanding creative team, ensured that every detail honored his genius.
With the LA run set to continue through March 9 before the show heads to Broadway, Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends is already proving to be a must-see. And at its heart, Bernadette Peters remains the dazzling, timeless star that continues to remind us why Sondheim’s music—and her performances—are truly unforgettable.
