Big W’s Big Policy Shift – What Shoppers Need to Know
Hey everyone, let’s talk about a major change happening at Big W that could affect the way you shop. If you’re someone who often returns items because you changed your mind, you might want to listen up!
Big W, one of Australia’s biggest retail chains, has officially updated its “Change of Mind” returns policy , and some shoppers might find themselves caught off guard. This new policy, which kicked in on February 3, 2025 , has a list of items that can no longer be returned simply because you had second thoughts.
A shopper at the Big W Eastgardens store in Sydney recently spotted a sign outlining these changes and shared it on social media, urging others to take note before heading to the store. And let’s be honest—no one likes the frustration of trying to return something only to find out it's non-refundable!

So, what’s on the no-return list now? Well, some of the obvious ones include cosmetics, beauty products, and underwear (excluding bras) —especially if the packaging or hygiene seal has been opened. But there are a few surprising additions too! Printer cartridges, personalised printed items, bedding and accessories (if opened), tents, trampolines, and furniture (if components have been used) are now excluded from change-of-mind returns.
There’s been mixed reactions to this update. Some shoppers fully support the change, arguing that no one wants to buy returned items like makeup or underwear. Others were shocked, assuming these restrictions were already in place.
Despite the stricter rules, Big W still offers a 90-day return window for most items as long as they remain in brand-new condition —meaning unopened, unused, and in original packaging . However, keep in mind that clearance items, prepaid cards, digital downloads, and food items are also non-refundable.
The bottom line? Before heading to Big W with a return, double-check the new policy to avoid any surprises at the checkout. What do you think—fair policy update, or too strict? Let’s talk about it!
