Brace Yourself: New Jersey Faces Another Nasty Winter Storm

Here we go again! For the fourth time in just nine days, New Jersey is gearing up for another winter storm, and this one’s bringing a nasty mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. If you have plans for the weekend, you might want to rethink them because road conditions could turn treacherous fast.

Forecasters are tracking a fast-moving system coming in from the Ohio Valley, expected to hit the state by Saturday afternoon and last through early Sunday. Northern parts of New Jersey are looking at the heaviest snowfall, with projections ranging from 5 to 7 inches—some areas could even see up to 8 inches. Meanwhile, central and southern regions will get less snow, but that doesn’t mean an easy ride. Warmer air will cause the snow to shift into sleet and freezing rain, leaving behind dangerously icy roads and sidewalks.

The National Weather Service warns that up to one-tenth of an inch of ice could accumulate on untreated surfaces, making driving and walking extremely hazardous. Even though earlier forecasts suggested a quarter-inch of ice in some areas, the latest updates have dialed it back. Still, even a thin layer of ice can turn roads into skating rinks, so caution is key.

Snow is expected to begin Saturday afternoon, with the heaviest bursts hitting in the evening. At its peak, snowfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour in northern counties. As temperatures fluctuate, snow will gradually turn into sleet and freezing rain overnight. By early Sunday morning, precipitation should start tapering off, but lingering snow showers could persist in northern New Jersey.

Because of these conditions, state officials have issued a travel ban for large commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and certain other vehicles on major highways, including Interstates 76, 78, 80, 195, 280, 287, and 295, among others. This restriction starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday and remains in effect until further notice.

Most of New Jersey’s 21 counties are under winter weather advisories, while Bergen and Passaic counties are under a more severe winter storm warning due to heavier snowfall projections. Snow totals will vary across the state—northern areas will see 5 to 8 inches, while central and southern parts will likely get 1 to 3 inches, plus ice accumulation.

The storm may move out by early Sunday, but that doesn’t mean the winter weather is done. Forecasters are already watching more storm systems next week, which could bring additional snow and ice.

Bottom line? If you don’t need to be on the roads, stay put. Drive carefully, stay warm, and keep an eye on updates as this storm moves in. New Jersey is in for another messy winter weekend!
