Canada’s New Fentanyl ‘Czar’ Kevin Brosseau Takes on the Opioid Crisis
Canada has officially appointed Kevin Brosseau as the country’s new fentanyl commissioner, a role that many had initially labeled as a “czar” position. However, Brosseau himself has emphasized that his role is not about wielding unchecked power but about leading a focused effort to curb the illegal fentanyl supply in the country.
Public Safety Minister David McGuinty made it clear that Brosseau’s top priority will be cutting off the illegal flow of fentanyl, a highly potent and dangerous opioid that has fueled a devastating public health crisis across North America. Speaking at a press conference near the Ontario-New York border, Brosseau stressed that even if Canada’s contribution to the U.S. fentanyl problem is relatively small, the goal should be to bring that number down to zero.

To tackle the issue head-on, Brosseau is set to meet with U.S. officials, including border czar Tom Homan, to coordinate efforts on stopping drug trafficking between the two nations. This move comes amid pressure from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly claimed—despite evidence to the contrary—that fentanyl smuggling from Canada poses a serious threat to the United States.
The appointment of Brosseau is part of a broader strategy by the Canadian government to show its commitment to combating the fentanyl crisis, particularly as the U.S. considers imposing tariffs on Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently pledged several measures to address the issue, including designating drug cartels as terrorist organizations and strengthening border security with a $1.3 billion investment. However, critics, including Conservative deputy leader Melissa Lantsman, have called out the government for what they see as mixed messaging, citing the reversal of drug decriminalization policies in British Columbia.
While Brosseau may not hold absolute power, his role is undoubtedly crucial. He will be leading an effort that spans law enforcement, border control, public health, and international cooperation.
