Devastating Floods Leave Huntington Residents Picking Up the Pieces
The past few days have been nothing short of a nightmare for residents in Huntington, West Virginia, as devastating floods have left homes and streets submerged in water. Among the hardest hit is Terry Berry, a Westmoreland resident, whose basement took on five feet of water, destroying priceless family heirlooms, books, and irreplaceable photographs. For him and many others, the reality of the situation is sinking in, and the cleanup is just beginning.
"I don’t even know where to start," Berry admitted, overwhelmed by the destruction. His basement, once filled with cherished memories, is now a soggy, unrecognizable mess. Like many in his neighborhood, he is searching for anything that might be salvageable.

City officials have acknowledged the severity of the situation. Huntington Mayor Patrick Farrell visited Berry’s home to see the damage firsthand. During a press conference, Farrell revealed that a malfunction in the pump system near the Westmoreland area contributed to the extensive flooding, making a bad situation even worse. In response, Huntington Public Works crews have been mobilized, working tirelessly to remove flood debris and assist affected homeowners. Special pick-ups for water-damaged items started early Friday morning and will continue as long as necessary.
For many, this flood is a painful reminder of how vulnerable communities are to extreme weather events. The heavy rains overwhelmed Krout Creek, turning streets into rivers and leaving behind destruction in their wake. Across the city, residents are stepping up to help their neighbors, demonstrating the resilience and community spirit that Huntington is known for.
Authorities are urging residents to report damage and request assistance through the Huntington WV 311 app or online. As the cleanup continues, one thing is clear—this disaster has left an undeniable mark on the community, but together, Huntington will rebuild.
