Djokovic Confident About Recovery but Cautious Against Berrettini in Doha

Novak Djokovic is back in action, and the big question on everyone’s mind is—how’s the leg holding up? Well, good news for his fans: Djokovic says he’s feeling great! After a heartbreaking injury at the Australian Open that forced him to retire during the semifinals against Alexander Zverev, the 24-time Grand Slam champion is making his singles comeback at the Qatar Open. And according to him, there’s no pain.

Djokovic sustained a muscle tear in his left leg during his quarterfinal match against Carlos Alcaraz in Melbourne, which ultimately led to his withdrawal. But now, just a few weeks later, he’s not only back on court but sounding confident. He already tested his fitness in a doubles match alongside Fernando Verdasco, where they breezed past Alexander Bublik and Karen Khachanov in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). More importantly, Djokovic said he didn’t feel any discomfort.

Speaking to the media after his doubles win, the Serbian superstar assured everyone that he’s been training hard and hasn’t felt any pain. “I’ve been feeling great, training the past ten days, and the last three days here in Doha. Today’s doubles match, it’s different from singles, but it still requires dynamic movement. It felt great, so I have no concerns,” he said.

However, Djokovic isn’t taking anything for granted, especially with his first-round opponent being Matteo Berrettini. The Italian is a powerful player with a big serve and a deadly forehand, making him a dangerous challenge right from the start. Djokovic admitted that it’s not the easiest draw for a return match, but he’s looking at it positively. “It’s good for me to be really locked in from the first point of the first match and not take any chances,” he added.

The last time these two faced off in a big match was the 2021 Wimbledon final, where Djokovic came out on top. In fact, he holds a 4-0 head-to-head record against Berrettini. But with Djokovic just coming back from injury, this match could be more unpredictable than their past encounters.

All eyes will be on the world No. 1 as he steps onto the court in Doha. Will he continue his dominance over Berrettini, or will the Italian pull off a big upset? One thing is certain—Djokovic is back, and he’s ready to compete.
