Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard Defends Her Leadership Amid Financial Investigation and Public Scrutiny

Tiffany Henyard, the embattled mayor of Dolton and the supervisor of Thornton Township, has been facing increased scrutiny in recent months due to a series of controversies. Most recently, Henyard found herself in the spotlight after a brawl erupted during a Thornton Township board meeting. The altercation, which involved heated exchanges between attendees, escalated to the point where Henyard was seen rushing to the center of the commotion. This incident is only the latest in a growing list of events that have raised questions about her leadership.

On Friday, Henyard sat down with ABC7 Chicago to address the ongoing investigation into Dolton's finances. Until this point, the mayor had kept a relatively low profile on the matter. However, during her interview, Henyard spoke candidly about the challenges she’s been facing. “I understand everyone wants me to be the target,” she said, acknowledging the intense pressure she has been under as both a young mayor and the first female to hold the position in Dolton. “But that’s not the truth,” she added, emphasizing the long-standing issues in the village that she inherited.

Henyard's tenure has been marred by a controversial financial report that suggests the village’s expenditures grew significantly under her leadership. Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot recently revealed that Dolton's deficit at one point reached $3.65 million. The report also highlighted that village expenses were charged to six credit cards, including large amounts spent at places like Wayfair and Amazon, with some receipts missing or incomplete. One such expense included over $40,000 for items related to an ice skating rink.

While Henyard has denied any wrongdoing, she maintains that the expenses were approved and that she was not personally responsible for the purchases. “Put the responsibility where it goes,” she said. Her attorney, Beau Brindley, also defended her, stating that political spectacle, rather than the truth, was the focus of the investigation. They argue that Henyard is being unfairly blamed for the actions of others within the administration.

The financial investigation isn't the only controversy surrounding Henyard. Earlier this week, a violent altercation broke out during a Thornton Township meeting, where Henyard, who is also the township supervisor, was caught on video intervening. According to Henyard’s attorney, a man from outside Dolton had allegedly attacked the mayor’s boyfriend with a knife, prompting Henyard to step in. The incident led to no arrests or charges, but it certainly added fuel to the fire of public criticism.

In light of these developments, Henyard has faced increasing calls for transparency and accountability. She herself has said she is dealing with the challenges of 30 years of neglect in Dolton, a situation she feels has left her under heightened scrutiny. Despite the criticism, Henyard remains firm in her resolve to defend her actions and leadership. As her tenure continues, the mayor has made it clear that she will not back down, even as the investigations into Dolton's finances and her own conduct continue to unfold.
