Edinburgh Braces for Snow as ‘Beast from Europe’ Approaches
So, here we go again—another winter blast is on the horizon, and this time, Edinburgh is right in the path of a major snowstorm. Weather maps are showing that the so-called ‘Beast from Europe’ is set to bring heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures across large parts of the UK, and Edinburgh is among the cities expected to get hit. If you were hoping for an early spring, you might have to wait a bit longer.
According to the latest forecasts, the snow will start rolling in around March 3, beginning in the south of the UK and making its way northward. By the evening, rain and snow will be widespread, covering parts of Manchester, Yorkshire, North Wales, and right up to Edinburgh. Some areas could see snow falling at a rate of around 5cm per hour, which means travel disruptions are almost guaranteed.

Now, here’s the kicker—while some areas might get away with just a dusting, parts of Scotland, including Edinburgh, could see more significant accumulations. Weather maps indicate that by March 4, most of Scotland will be covered in snow, and temperatures will drop below freezing. And as if that wasn’t enough, the Met Office has also issued warnings about the possibility of freezing rain in some regions, which could turn roads and pavements into ice rinks. So, if you’re planning to be out and about, be extra cautious.
Interestingly, while much of the UK is gearing up for this winter blast, the southeast of England might completely dodge the snow. However, the Midlands, the north of England, and most of Scotland—including Edinburgh—are in for a chilly few days. The Met Office has yet to fully confirm the extent of the snowfall, but long-range forecasts suggest that while conditions could be changeable, there’s a strong chance of wintry showers and icy conditions.
For anyone in Edinburgh, this means it’s time to get ready—whether that’s digging out your winter boots, preparing for possible travel delays, or just stocking up on hot drinks to get through the cold spell. We’ll be keeping an eye on updates from the Met Office, but for now, it looks like winter isn’t quite done with us yet. Stay safe and stay warm!
