Extreme Cold Warning Hits Calgary, but Relief is on the Way
Calgary is currently under an extreme cold warning as frigid temperatures continue to grip the city this Family Day long weekend. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the region is facing wind chill values that could feel as cold as -40°C, making it one of the coldest stretches of weather this winter.
The biting cold will remain with us through the weekend, with temperatures on Sunday expected to peak at -18°C. However, the wind chill will make it feel like -29°C, and by evening, the temperature will drop to -27°C with a wind chill plummeting to -36°C. On Monday, Family Day, the chill will persist, with the wind chill in the morning reaching -36°C and a high of -19°C. The ECCC emphasizes that this extreme cold poses a significant risk, particularly for young children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic health conditions.

Meteorologists are urging everyone to take necessary precautions, such as dressing warmly in layers and ensuring exposed skin is protected to avoid frostbite. It’s essential to remember that frostbite can set in within minutes in such extreme conditions, so it's critical to limit time outdoors when possible. If you do venture out, make sure to wear wind-resistant outer layers and protect your face and extremities from the cold.
Despite the severe cold, there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon. The weather is expected to improve later in the week, with temperatures climbing back above freezing by Thursday, and possibly reaching double digits by Friday. This welcome change is attributed to a shift in the jet stream, which is set to bring milder Pacific air into Alberta. Meteorologists predict that the chinook winds, which bring warm bursts of air, could make a return next weekend, although some people who are prone to headaches might not enjoy the sudden warmth.
As for the longer-term outlook, predictions for an early spring, such as those made by the Alberta groundhog “Balzac Billy,” may be premature. However, the rest of February is expected to bring much more manageable weather than the first half of the month.
For now, the best advice is to bundle up and be prepared for another chilly day. Keep a close eye on the latest weather updates, and if the cold is too much to handle, make sure you and your pets stay indoors.
Calgarians can look forward to some warmth after enduring these bitterly cold days. But for now, patience is key as we ride out one of the coldest stretches of winter in recent memory.
