GameStop Plans to Sell Canadian and French Operations
So, big news coming out of GameStop—looks like the company is making some serious moves by looking to sell off its operations in Canada and France. This announcement came straight from GameStop Corp., and it’s part of what they’re calling an evaluation of their international assets. Basically, they’re looking at their global footprint and deciding what stays and what goes.
Now, they haven’t given us a ton of details on why they’re making this decision, but CEO Ryan Cohen had something to say about it. Earlier today, he posted on X (formerly Twitter) about the sale, adding a pretty pointed remark: “High taxes, Liberalism, Socialism, Progressivism, Wokeness and DEI included at no additional cost if you buy today!” —which, let’s be honest, is a pretty loaded statement. GameStop itself hasn’t officially commented on his post, but it’s already stirring up reactions online.

As of last year, GameStop had 203 locations in Canada, so this isn’t just a small side decision—it’s a major shift for the company. Cohen has been leading the charge since 2023, and ever since he took over as CEO (while already being board chair and the company’s biggest individual investor), he’s been all about cutting costs and focusing on profitability. At last year’s shareholder meeting, he even mentioned plans to shrink their store network, so this latest move lines up with that strategy.
Financially, GameStop has had its ups and downs. In their last quarter, they actually turned a profit—$17.4 million—compared to a loss in the same period the year before. But even with that, sales dropped to $860.3 million. So, while they’re making money, it’s clear they’re still trying to figure out a sustainable long-term strategy.
Of course, GameStop is no stranger to the spotlight. We all remember the whole meme stock phenomenon, where retail investors sent its stock soaring in 2021. That wild ride made GameStop a household name beyond just gaming, but now, the company seems focused on making more traditional business moves—like selling off parts of its international operations.
What does this mean for GameStop in Canada and France? Will another retailer swoop in to take over, or will these locations shut down for good? And how will this impact the gaming retail space in these regions? Definitely a story worth keeping an eye on.
