Gill's Century Seals India's Dominant Win Over Bangladesh
India kicked off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign in style, securing a convincing six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Dubai. The star of the show? None other than Shubman Gill, whose composed century guided India to a comfortable chase of 229 runs with more than three overs to spare.
Bangladesh, having won the toss and opted to bat first, found themselves in deep trouble early on. Indian pacer Mohammed Shami was on fire, ripping through the top order and reducing them to a disastrous 35-5 inside nine overs. Shami ended up with a stunning five-wicket haul, reaffirming why he's one of India's most lethal bowlers in ODI cricket. Axar Patel, on the other hand, came close to a hat-trick, only to be denied by a dropped catch from skipper Rohit Sharma, who later joked, "Maybe I'll take Axar for dinner tomorrow!"
Despite the horror start, Bangladesh showed great resilience through a magnificent partnership between Tawhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali. The duo stitched together a crucial 154-run stand, with Hridoy scoring a brilliant 100 off 118 balls, while Jaker contributed a patient 68. Their efforts helped Bangladesh reach a respectable 228 before being bowled out in the 50th over.

In response, India’s chase was well-paced, thanks to a solid opening partnership. Rohit Sharma played an aggressive 41 off 36 balls before falling, while Gill took control of the innings. With Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer departing without big scores, it was Gill's calm and calculated approach that anchored India's innings. He remained unbeaten on 101 off 129 balls, ensuring there were no last-minute hiccups. KL Rahul provided a strong finish, smashing a six to seal the victory in style.
Gill, named Player of the Match, called it one of his most satisfying centuries, highlighting the challenge of batting on a slow surface. His ability to adapt, rotate strike, and accelerate at the right moments showcased why he is one of India's brightest young stars.
For Bangladesh, it was a case of what could have been. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto admitted that losing early wickets cost them dearly, stating, "We were 25 or 30 runs short." He also pointed out fielding lapses, with a few missed chances and run-outs proving costly.
This win gives India a strong start in the tournament, while Bangladesh will need to regroup quickly if they want to stay in the race for the knockout stages. With more exciting matches ahead, the Champions Trophy is heating up, and fans can expect plenty more thrilling cricket in the days to come!
