Hunter Schafer Speaks Out After Passport Gender Marker Changed
Hunter Schafer, the talented actress known for her role as Jules on HBO’s Euphoria , is speaking out after a shocking experience with her newly issued passport. In an emotional video posted on social media, Schafer revealed that despite applying for her passport with a female gender marker—something she has had on her government IDs since her teenage years—her new passport was issued with a male marker.

This change comes in the wake of a policy implemented by the Trump administration, which mandates that passports reflect an individual’s sex assigned at birth. While Schafer was aware of the executive order, she admitted she didn’t fully believe it would be enforced until she saw it happen to her. Holding up her passport in disbelief, she expressed frustration, stating, “Trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing. I’m never gonna stop being trans. A letter on a passport can’t change that. And f--- this administration.”
Schafer emphasized that she wasn’t sharing her experience to seek sympathy or create drama, but rather to shed light on the real impact of these policies on transgender individuals. She also acknowledged the privilege she holds as a well-known figure with access to resources, but expressed deep concern for those without the same visibility and support.
The actress also pointed out a troubling reality—because she never updated her birth certificate, it appears that agencies responsible for issuing passports are now cross-referencing birth records, overriding gender markers that have been legally changed on other documents. This raises serious concerns for trans individuals, many of whom may now find themselves facing unexpected barriers when trying to travel internationally. Schafer, who is scheduled to leave the country next week, admitted she is now worried about being forced to "out" herself to border patrol officials.
Beyond this specific policy, Schafer warned about the broader implications of these government actions. She voiced fears about how these restrictions could slowly become normalized, comparing them to historical patterns of discrimination and oppression.
In addition to this passport policy, the Trump administration has enacted several other measures targeting the trans community, including restrictions on transgender athletes in school sports, bans on trans military service members, and limits on access to gender-affirming healthcare for minors. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has already filed a lawsuit against these policies, calling them discriminatory and unconstitutional.
Despite the challenges ahead, Schafer remains unwavering in her identity. She ended her message with a powerful statement: “No matter what they put on my passport, I will always be trans. This is real, and it’s happening. But we will never stop existing.”
