iPhone 16e Unveiled – Major Redesign, USB-C, and the Latest A18 Chip

Apple has just unveiled the iPhone 16e , a brand-new addition to the iPhone 16 series and a long-awaited successor to the SE lineup. This time, Apple has made some major changes , both in design and hardware, making this entry-level model more modern and powerful than ever before. Pre-orders start on February 21 , with an official release date set for February 28 . The price? Starting at 99,800 yen (about $670 USD) —a bit higher than previous SE models but packed with cutting-edge tech.

So, what makes the iPhone 16e so special? First, Apple has completely ditched the home button and Lightning port . Instead, it now features Face ID for authentication and USB-C for charging and data transfer—finally bringing it in line with Apple’s other devices. The display has also seen a massive upgrade, replacing the old LCD panel with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display , which means better colors, sharper resolution, and thinner bezels . Yes, it has a notch, but that’s because Face ID and the front camera are housed there.

Under the hood, the iPhone 16e packs a punch with Apple’s latest A18 chip , the same one found in the iPhone 16 series. This chip, combined with Apple’s first-ever in-house modem, the Apple C1 , ensures faster performance and improved connectivity . On the camera front, it sticks with a single 48MP rear camera , but the quality should be significantly better than its SE predecessor. Wireless charging is supported , but it uses the Qi standard instead of MagSafe .

A particularly exciting feature is Apple Intelligence , Apple’s new AI-powered assistant that enhances everything from text generation to personalized recommendations. However, this AI functionality will roll out in Japan starting in early April .

The iPhone 16e comes in three storage options:

  • 128GB for 99,800 yen
  • 256GB for 114,800 yen
  • 512GB for 144,800 yen

And for colors, Apple is keeping it simple— Black and White .

Interestingly, Apple has not officially labeled the iPhone 16e as an "SE" replacement , but the fact that the iPhone SE (3rd Gen) has been removed from Apple’s lineup makes it clear that this is its successor.

So, is the iPhone 16e worth it ? Well, if you’ve been holding onto an older iPhone SE , this is a massive leap forward in terms of design, display, and performance. However, the price is noticeably higher, and some may miss the classic Home button experience . But for those wanting a more modern, budget-friendly iPhone , the 16e is looking like a solid choice .
