Kako Shines as Bombers Take Down Cats in Pre-Season Thriller
Essendon fans, get excited—there’s a new star in town! Young gun Isaac Kako lit up GMHBA Stadium in a stunning display, kicking four goals and leading the Bombers to a 21-point win over Geelong in the AAMI Community Series. If Tuesday night’s performance is anything to go by, the future is bright for this rising star.
Kako, Essendon’s top draft pick, made an immediate impact, slotting goals in every way imaginable. He was everywhere—crumbing at the feet of the big forwards, nailing set shots, and showing off his agility around goal. He could’ve even had a fifth if not for a last-second touch on the line, but four was more than enough to have Bombers fans buzzing. Alongside fellow young forward Nate Caddy, who kicked three majors, the duo gave a glimpse of what Essendon’s future forward line might look like.
But it wasn’t just the young guns who stood out. The Bombers’ midfield was in full flight, with captain Zach Merrett, Jye Caldwell, and Elijah Tsatas dominating through the middle. Tsatas, in particular, was outstanding, racking up 31 disposals and 10 clearances, proving he’s ready to make a serious impact in 2025. Dylan Shiel, playing a new role off half-back, looked rejuvenated, collecting 25 touches and providing plenty of drive from defence.

On the other side, Geelong had their moments, with Jeremy Cameron and Tyson Stengle leading the way in attack. Cameron’s class was on full display, including a brilliant boundary-line snap that had the home crowd on their feet. Mitch Knevitt also impressed, picking up plenty of the ball as he pushes for a spot in Round 1.
The Cats are still adjusting to life without Tom Hawkins, and while Patrick Dangerfield spent more time forward, they’ll need to find the right balance before the season opener against Brisbane. Gryan Miers was their best on the night, racking up 30 disposals and showing why he’s one of the most dangerous players going around.
For Essendon, the signs are promising. After a disappointing end to 2024, they’ve come out firing this pre-season, moving the ball quickly and efficiently. Their 17.2 (104) to 12.11 (83) victory wasn’t just about the scoreboard—it was about the way they played. Fast, aggressive, and full of energy.
And let’s talk about Kako again—because this kid is special. Four goals in a pre-season game might not always mean much, but it’s the way he went about it. Composed, confident, and electric around goal, he’s already putting his hand up for a Rising Star nomination in 2025.
With the season just around the corner, Essendon fans have plenty to be excited about. Could this be the year the Bombers finally make their move? If Tuesday night was anything to go by, they’re ready to shake things up.
