Lakers' Incredible Trade Streak Continues with Mark Williams Deal

You just have to shake your head at how things always seem to work out for the Los Angeles Lakers. Just when you think they might be heading toward a rough stretch, they somehow end up landing another key piece that fits perfectly into their puzzle. This time, it's Mark Williams, and it almost feels unfair.

We’ve seen this story before. The Lakers go through a rough patch, and then—boom!—they land a Hall of Famer or make a lopsided trade that leaves the rest of the league shaking their heads. Wilt. Kareem. Magic. Shaq and Kobe. When Shaq left, they pulled off a trade for Pau Gasol so lopsided that even Gregg Popovich was calling for an investigation. Then came LeBron, followed by Anthony Davis. And now, right when LeBron is nearing the twilight of his career, Luka Doncic just magically falls into their lap.

But wait, it gets even crazier. Even after somehow pulling off the Luka trade, the Lakers still had enough draft capital left over to snag Mark Williams, a young, athletic center who fits perfectly with Luka’s playstyle. Casual fans might not know his name, but trust me, he's exactly what the Lakers needed—a big man who thrives as a lob threat, which is exactly the type of player Luka loves playing with.

And how did Lakers GM Rob Pelinka make all this happen? Apparently, by just showing up. Reports say he didn’t even have to actively negotiate. He just got a call from Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison, who was offering Luka. As if that wasn’t absurd enough, Charlotte later calls up and offers exactly the type of center the Lakers need. It’s like the league is just handing them gifts.

To put this into perspective, the Knicks gave up five draft picks for Mikal Bridges—a solid but non-All-Star player. The Hawks gave up four for Dejounte Murray. The Lakers, meanwhile, managed to land Luka Doncic for essentially one pick. That alone should’ve bankrupted them in terms of assets, yet somehow, they still had enough left to pull off the Mark Williams trade.

It almost doesn’t seem real. Lakers fans are, of course, celebrating. The rest of the league? Not so much. At this point, it feels like the basketball gods have a favorite team, and it’s the one in purple and gold.
