Legendary Jam Drummer Rick Buckler Passes Away at 69
It’s a sad day for music fans—Rick Buckler, the legendary drummer of The Jam, has passed away at the age of 69. His former bandmates, Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton, confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing their deep sorrow and sharing memories of their time together. Buckler, who played a crucial role in shaping the sound of The Jam, died peacefully on Monday evening in Woking, surrounded by his loved ones after a brief illness.
For those who grew up with the energy and attitude of The Jam, Buckler was more than just a drummer—he was a driving force behind the band's unmistakable sound. His precise, powerful drumming style helped define the group’s hits, including Going Underground , A Town Called Malice , and Down in the Tube Station at Midnight . With 18 consecutive UK Top 40 singles and four number-one hits, The Jam left an indelible mark on British music, influencing countless bands that followed.

Paul Weller, reflecting on their early days, shared an emotional tribute: "I'm thinking back to us all rehearsing in my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking. To all the pubs and clubs we played as kids, to eventually making a record. What a journey!" Bruce Foxton also expressed his devastation, calling Buckler "a great drummer whose innovative drum patterns helped shape our songs."
Following The Jam’s split in 1982, Buckler remained active in the music scene, forming Time UK and later joining Foxton in From the Jam . He also took a step back from performing for a time, working as a carpenter before returning to music with spoken-word tours and books about The Jam’s legacy.
Sadly, he had recently canceled a planned spoken-word tour due to health concerns, and now, just weeks later, the world has lost another musical icon. Fans have been flooding social media with tributes, remembering Buckler’s incredible contributions to music. One fan wrote, "RIP Rick Buckler. Thanks for all the good times and great memories." Another shared, "First band I ever saw live and still the best. He was a massive influence on me as a young drummer."
Buckler leaves behind his wife, Leslie, and their two children. His legacy, however, will live on in the music that continues to inspire generations. Rest in peace, Rick—you gave us a soundtrack to remember.
