Major Crash Shuts Down M5 in Somerset, Causing Severe Delays

The M5 in Somerset is currently shut down in both directions following a serious collision, causing major disruption for motorists. The accident occurred between junction 24 for Bridgwater and junction 25 for Taunton earlier this afternoon. Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed that the motorway will remain closed for "some time" as emergency services respond to the situation.

The crash, which reportedly involves a lorry, was first reported just before 3:00 PM GMT. Traffic was immediately halted, and diversions were put in place to manage the congestion. National Highways has urged drivers to find alternative routes and allow extra travel time, as the closure is expected to last for several hours.

Authorities are calling for anyone with dashcam footage or relevant information about the incident to come forward. They are particularly interested in footage captured around the time of the crash to help with their investigation. Motorists who were traveling in the area are encouraged to contact the police at 101, referencing case number 5225050845.

Traffic delays have quickly built up, with congestion stretching back to junction 23 for Bridgwater North and affecting surrounding roads. The diversion routes, marked with solid diamond and circle symbols, are directing vehicles along the A38 and A358, but heavy traffic remains a challenge.

This is the second significant crash on the M5 today. Earlier in the afternoon, another accident was reported further north between junction 21 for Weston-super-Mare and junction 20 for Clevedon, causing lane closures and severe congestion in that area as well.

With both accidents happening within hours of each other, authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and stay updated on the latest traffic reports. Those traveling through Somerset should plan accordingly and expect extended delays.

We’ll continue to provide updates as more details emerge. Stay safe on the roads, and if you have any information that could assist authorities, please reach out to the police.
