Max George Opens Up About Terrifying Second Heart Surgery

Pop star Max George has shared the harrowing details of his second unexpected heart surgery, revealing that doctors warned he could “bleed out” during the procedure. The Wanted singer, who had a pacemaker fitted in December, faced a major setback when he learned that the device’s wires had been inserted too deeply into his heart. The news was a crushing blow just as he was starting to feel like he was on the road to recovery.

Max, 36, admitted that the prospect of another operation made him incredibly anxious. "I didn’t have a choice," he said. "I had to have it done." The surgery, performed on January 15, was deemed necessary after he continued to experience severe discomfort and a strange flickering sensation in his chest. His heart was reacting unpredictably, sending shocks through his body whenever his heart rate increased.

The fear of complications was very real. Doctors informed Max that removing the pacemaker wires could lead to excessive bleeding—a potentially fatal risk. The night before the surgery, he barely slept, overwhelmed with nerves. But despite his fears, the two-hour procedure was a success. This time, he was allowed to listen to music during the operation, and hearing Oasis helped him stay calm.

Unfortunately, his health struggles didn’t end there. Just days later, Max had to return to the hospital for a lung biopsy after doctors discovered enlarged lymph nodes. The biopsy itself was a painful experience, involving a camera with prongs being inserted down his throat. He described the recovery as brutal—chest pain, coughing up blood for days—but thankfully, the results came back clear.

One of the hardest parts of the whole ordeal, Max admitted, was seeing how much it affected his loved ones, especially his parents. His mother, in particular, found the situation traumatic, and Max did his best to put on a brave face for her. Through it all, his girlfriend, actress Maisie Smith, has been by his side, supporting him every step of the way.

Now, as he continues his slow recovery, Max is trying to regain his strength, taking long walks with his bulldog Albert and gradually increasing his exercise routine. Though he was once in peak physical condition, he now finds himself at his least fit—but he’s determined to get back to full health.

As for whether he’ll return to the stage with The Wanted 2.0 and his planned theater tour, that remains uncertain. For now, Max is focused on his health, grateful to have made it through a truly terrifying experience.
