Measles Alert Issued After Infected Person Attends Drake’s Perth Concert

Hey everyone, I’ve got an important health update coming out of Western Australia. If you were at Drake’s concert in Perth on February 4th, or visited certain locations around the city recently, you might want to pay close attention. WA Health has issued an urgent measles warning after a confirmed case was linked to several public places, including the concert at RAC Arena.

Here’s what we know—this case involves a returned traveler from Bali who unknowingly carried the measles virus while visiting multiple locations in Perth between February 2 and February 7. Aside from the concert, exposure sites include a café, a barbershop, a GP after-hours clinic, and even the Department of Health itself. Health officials are now urging people who were at these locations during the specified times to monitor for symptoms for up to 18 days after potential exposure.

Now, let’s talk about measles. This is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through the air via coughs and sneezes. It’s so infectious that even entering a room where an infected person has been—up to 30 minutes after they left—could put you at risk. The early symptoms can feel like the flu: fever, tiredness, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes. But then, about three or four days later, a red, non-itchy rash appears, typically starting on the face before spreading to the rest of the body.

If you were at any of the exposure locations and start developing symptoms, WA Health advises you to wear a mask and seek medical attention immediately. But here’s the key part—call ahead before visiting a doctor or hospital. This helps prevent the virus from spreading further to other patients and healthcare workers.

Measles is rare in Australia, thanks to high vaccination rates, but outbreaks can still happen, especially when people bring the virus in from overseas. The best protection? Make sure you and your family are up to date with your measles vaccinations.

For the latest updates and a full list of exposure sites, check the WA Department of Health website. Stay safe, stay informed, and if you were at any of these locations, keep an eye on your health.
