Memphis Grizzlies Waive Former 1st-Round Pick Johnny Davis
Big news out of Memphis—the Grizzlies have officially decided to part ways with Johnny Davis. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the team is waiving the former 10th overall pick from the 2022 NBA Draft. This move comes just before their matchup against the Indiana Pacers, and it raises questions about Davis’ future in the league.
Davis, only 22 years old, was recently traded to Memphis as part of a three-team deal involving the Wizards and Kings. In that trade, the Grizzlies acquired Davis along with Marvin Bagley III and two future second-round picks. However, Davis never got the chance to suit up for Memphis, as the team decided to release him before he could make his debut.

Looking at his career so far, it’s been a tough road for Davis. In 112 games across three seasons, he's averaged 3.5 points and 1.6 rebounds per game while shooting just under 40% from the field and 27.3% from three. This season with the Wizards, he put up 2.4 points and 1.1 rebounds per contest in 34 games. Those numbers clearly didn’t convince the Grizzlies to keep him around.
So, why did Memphis make this move? The simple answer—roster space. The Grizzlies are dealing with injuries and lineup adjustments, and Davis wasn’t seen as a key piece moving forward. But that doesn’t mean his NBA journey is over. Charania noted that Davis is expected to draw interest from teams looking to add depth.
For now, Davis hits free agency, and it’ll be interesting to see where he lands next. A young player with his pedigree might still get another shot, but he’ll need to prove he belongs. Whether that happens in the NBA or somewhere else remains to be seen.
