Mexico’s President Sheinbaum Stays Cool Amid Trump’s Tariff Threats
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum is proving that in politics, keeping a calm and calculated approach can go a long way—especially when dealing with Donald Trump. In recent weeks, she has navigated tense negotiations with the U.S., showing a steady hand in the face of potential economic turmoil.
Trump recently threatened a 25% tariff on Mexican imports, a move that could have serious consequences for Mexico’s economy. But instead of reacting with anger or panic, Sheinbaum remained composed. She emphasized the importance of a "cool head," a strategy that ultimately led to a temporary pause in the tariffs after discussions with U.S. officials. The agreement involved deploying 10,000 members of Mexico’s National Guard to the border—something Mexico has done before—while also securing a U.S. commitment to work on stopping the flow of illegal firearms into Mexico, a longstanding demand from her administration.

This calm and strategic approach has won Sheinbaum praise both at home and abroad. Mexico’s business elite, including billionaire Carlos Slim, have commended her ability to handle Trump’s aggressive stance without giving up much in return. Even German Chancellor Olaf Scholz acknowledged her skillful diplomacy.
Sheinbaum’s handling of Trump contrasts sharply with other leaders who have clashed with the former U.S. president. For example, Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro faced a diplomatic setback after initially rejecting U.S. deportation flights, only to reverse course under pressure. Sheinbaum, however, has managed to stand firm without escalating tensions, a skill she likely learned from her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who maintained an unexpectedly cooperative relationship with Trump during his presidency.
Despite the ongoing challenges in U.S.-Mexico relations, Sheinbaum seems to be playing the long game. While Trump’s rhetoric on Mexico remains fiery—labeling cartels as terrorist organizations and pushing for tougher immigration policies—Sheinbaum has focused on diplomacy and pragmatism. She refuses to engage in public confrontations and instead secures behind-the-scenes deals that keep Mexico’s interests protected.
Her ability to remain steady under pressure will be crucial as Mexico continues to navigate a complex relationship with the U.S., especially if Trump maintains his tough stance on trade and border security. But so far, Sheinbaum has shown that in a world of political power struggles, sometimes the best move is simply keeping your cool.
