NYT Strands Puzzle for February 19 – Hints, Spangram, and Answers

Alright, puzzle lovers, let’s talk about today’s NYT Strands ! If you haven’t played it yet, Strands is The New York Times’ fresh take on word search games, currently in beta. It’s a daily challenge where you need to find words hidden in a six-by-eight letter grid, all connected by a common theme. Each puzzle also includes a special word, called a spangram , which acts as the key to figuring out the theme. Unlike the regular theme words, the spangram can be a proper name, and it stretches from one side of the board to the other.

Now, let’s get into today’s ( February 19, 2025 ) Strands puzzle—game #353. The official theme is “Pick your own prefix.” Sounds simple, right? Well, not exactly. At first, I had no idea what was going on. Some of the words I found made zero sense together, and I was left second-guessing myself the whole way through. But after a bit of struggling (and maybe using a clue or two), it finally clicked!

The big reveal? The puzzle is all about berries ! That’s right, every theme word is a type of berry, and the spangram tying everything together is BERRIES . If you’re still working through it, here are today’s answers:

  • BLACK
  • RASP
  • STRAW
  • HUCKLE
  • ELDER
  • SALMON

I’ll admit, some of these threw me off. I mean, Salmon berry? That was a new one for me—I actually had to look it up! But once I spotted a pattern in the prefixes ( Golden berry, Blue berry, Straw berry, etc.), it all made sense. The trick was recognizing that the words all shared a common suffix, rather than a prefix like the theme suggested. Pretty clever, right?

That’s the fun of Strands —some days are straightforward, others will have you scratching your head. And just like Wordle , the game will keep throwing curveballs to keep players on their toes. If you missed yesterday’s puzzle, don’t worry—the NYT archives keep track of all past Strands games.

So, did today’s puzzle stump you, or did you breeze through it? Let me know how you did! And if you’re up for another challenge, there’s always tomorrow’s Strands waiting for you.
