Pope Francis Faces Health Setback Amid Respiratory Complications
Pope Francis has encountered another serious health challenge as he remains hospitalized in Rome. The Vatican has confirmed that the 88-year-old pontiff suffered a sudden respiratory crisis on Friday, marking a significant setback in his recovery. This incident comes after he was first admitted to the Gemelli hospital on February 14 due to bronchitis, which later progressed to double pneumonia.
According to the Vatican’s statement, Pope Francis experienced an "isolated bronchospasm crisis" in the afternoon, which led to vomiting and subsequent inhalation issues. This caused an alarming deterioration in his breathing, prompting his medical team to provide immediate intervention. He was placed on a ventilator with a mask, and thankfully, his oxygen levels responded positively to the treatment. The Vatican emphasized that despite the episode, the pope remained alert and fully aware of his surroundings, cooperating with medical staff throughout the process.

Initially, there were signs of improvement in the pope’s condition earlier in the week. He had been stable, sleeping better, and even engaging in light activities such as prayer and breathing exercises. However, Friday’s relapse has raised concerns, with the Vatican stating that his prognosis remains uncertain. Doctors are closely monitoring his condition, particularly after the recent CT scan that revealed the extent of inflammation in both lungs.
Pope Francis has a history of respiratory issues. Decades ago, he had part of his lung removed due to severe pleurisy, making him more vulnerable to lung infections. In addition to pneumonia, he was also diagnosed with thrombocytopenia—low platelet count—which required blood transfusions to stabilize his hemoglobin levels.
Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis has continued to fulfill some of his papal duties from his hospital room. The Vatican recently released a letter signed by him, showing his unwavering commitment to his responsibilities. However, due to his condition, he will not be leading the upcoming Ash Wednesday service on March 5, a significant event marking the beginning of Lent. A senior Vatican official will take his place.
Meanwhile, devout Catholics worldwide are holding prayer vigils for the pope’s recovery. In Rome, nuns and faithful believers have gathered outside Gemelli hospital, lighting candles and offering prayers in his name. The global Catholic community remains deeply concerned as they await further updates on his health.
As Pope Francis continues to battle these severe respiratory complications, the Vatican’s medical team remains vigilant. The world watches and prays for his strength, hoping that the leader of the Catholic Church will recover soon.
