Quaker Oats Recalls Pearl Milling Pancake Mix Over Milk Allergen Risk
The Quaker Oats Company, which is a subsidiary of PepsiCo, recently made headlines with an important recall of its Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix. Originally known as Aunt Jemima before a rebranding in 2021, the product is now under scrutiny due to a serious food safety issue.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an urgent warning regarding the product, escalating the recall to a Class I level, which is the highest risk category for food-related issues. This classification indicates that the consumption or exposure to the affected pancake mix could cause severe or even fatal allergic reactions, particularly for those with milk allergies. The problem stems from the presence of undeclared milk in some of the two-pound boxes of the mix. For consumers who have milk allergies or are highly sensitive, consuming the affected product could lead to life-threatening reactions. While no allergic reactions have been reported so far, the potential risk is serious enough for the recall to be elevated.

The recall was first initiated on January 14, 2025, when the Quaker Oats Company became aware of the problem through a retail partner. However, it wasn’t until February 13 that the FDA took the step of upgrading the recall to the Class I level. The affected products were sold in 11 states: Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Utah, and Wisconsin. The recall specifically targets Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix boxes with the UPC code 30000 65040 and a best-by date of September 12, 2025.
Consumers who have purchased this product, particularly those who are allergic to milk, are strongly advised to dispose of it immediately. The FDA has made it clear that these individuals should avoid consuming the product at all costs. The recall affects products that were sold starting from November 18, 2024, but the danger is still present for anyone who might have purchased the recalled mix since then.
While this recall has certainly raised alarms, it is not the first time Quaker Oats has faced such issues. In December 2023, the company recalled a variety of products due to possible salmonella contamination, including cereals and granola bars. Such recalls highlight the ongoing importance of consumer vigilance when it comes to food safety, especially when allergens are involved.
If you have the recalled pancake mix in your pantry, it’s crucial to check the UPC code and best-by date immediately. If your product matches the details of the recall, be sure to dispose of it safely. While no incidents have been reported yet, it is always better to be cautious when dealing with food products that pose an allergy risk.
Quaker Oats, in its latest statement, has assured the public that it is taking all necessary steps to prevent further issues. However, this incident serves as a reminder to all consumers to remain alert, especially when it comes to food products that contain common allergens.
