Remembering Jacques De Jongh – A Legend of Australian Rock

Australian music has lost one of its greats—Jacques De Jongh, the talented guitarist known for his work with Hush and the John Paul Young All-Stars, has passed away in Melbourne. His contributions to the glam rock scene of the 1970s left a lasting impact, and his legacy will be remembered by fans and fellow musicians alike.

Jacques first gained attention as a member of the Geelong-based band Redhouse Roll Band before joining Hush in 1976. It was during his time with Hush that he played rhythm guitar on their fifth and final album, Touché , which reached No. 36 on the charts in 1977. Keith Lamb, Hush’s frontman, praised Jacques for bringing next-level harmonies, a powerful rock-funk bass, and an undeniable stage presence to the band. His signature harmonies on "Nothing Stays the Same Forever" continue to echo through the music world, making his passing even more poignant.

Following his time with Hush, Jacques joined John Paul Young’s band in 1978, playing bass on the Heaven Sent album and possibly contributing to the iconic Love Is In The Air . His musical journey didn’t start or end there—before Hush, he was a part of the band Shadowfax, a group that recorded demos but never officially released an album. In the years after his rock career, Jacques continued to support the music industry by running a rehearsal studio and mentoring up-and-coming bands.

Beyond music, Jacques had a successful career as a chef, running his own restaurant and making a name for himself in the culinary world. Even as his health declined, he remained active in his passions, contributing to the music scene whenever he could.

Tributes have been pouring in from friends, fans, and fellow musicians, all remembering Jacques for his talent, generosity, and dedication to the craft. His impact on Australian rock cannot be overstated—he was a true artist, a mentor, and an unforgettable presence in the industry.
