Santa Fe's $900K Effort to Prosecute Alec Baldwin Over 'Rust' Shooting Uncovered
The ongoing saga surrounding Alec Baldwin and the tragic shooting on the set of Rust continues to evolve with some shocking financial revelations. In October 2021, Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while handling a gun on set. Initially, Baldwin faced involuntary manslaughter charges in January 2023. However, these were dropped in April 2023, following an investigation into the firearm used in the incident, which might have malfunctioned. But the case was far from over.
After an FBI report confirmed that the gun's trigger had to be pulled for it to fire, Baldwin was once again charged in January 2024. His trial started in July 2024 but was halted after just three days. The case was dismissed with prejudice when a witness testified that prosecutors had improperly handled evidence related to the armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, in a separate case. Baldwin was cleared of any further legal action, putting an end to the possibility of jail time.

Now, new information has come to light about the costs associated with the efforts to bring Baldwin to trial. The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Santa Fe revealed that around $898,000 was spent on prosecuting cases related to the shooting. This amount, however, might not represent the final total. According to earlier records, more than $760,000 had already been spent by July 2024, long before Baldwin’s trial took place. In total, it’s estimated that the prosecution's costs could exceed $911,000, but the true figure remains elusive, as some records were withheld due to "work product" privileges.
Santa Fe officials’ spending on this case wasn’t just about paying prosecutors. Significant sums were directed toward expert testimony, including flying an Italian gun manufacturer to New Mexico to attest that the firearm was in working condition when it left his factory. They also conducted extensive testing on the weapon and pursued other expert consultations, which further inflated the costs.
The prosecution also spent thousands investigating why live ammunition ended up on the Rust set. Despite these efforts, that question remains unanswered. An investigation by The Blast showed that thousands of dollars had been spent on ammunition for the production, but no one has yet been able to provide a definitive explanation for the presence of live rounds on set.
With Santa Fe officials devoting considerable resources to the prosecution of Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed, the financial and legal aspects of the Rust shooting have become a story in their own right. Despite the substantial investments, Baldwin is no longer facing charges, and the true cost of these extensive efforts remains up for debate. This complex case has raised significant questions not only about the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins but also about the immense costs tied to prosecuting high-profile cases in the public eye.
