Alright, let’s talk about La Dolce Villa , the new Netflix rom-com starring Scandal ’s Scott Foley. If you were hoping for a charming, sun-soaked love story set in the heart of Italy, you might want to lower those expectations. Directed by Mark Waters, this film tries to capture the magic of Under the Tuscan Sun but ends up feeling more like a forgettable vacation slideshow.

Foley plays Eric, a widowed father in his fifties, who reluctantly travels to Italy to stop his daughter, Liv (Maia Reficco), from making what he sees as a terrible life decision—buying a run-down villa for just one euro under a new government program. But instead of heading back home, Eric finds himself tangled up in a renovation project, a potential romance with the town’s mayor, Francesca (Violante Placido), and a whole lot of forced, cliché moments.

Now, let’s be real—Scott Foley is a solid actor. He brings a bit of charm to Eric, but the script doesn’t do him any favors. The father-daughter relationship lacks depth, and Liv’s journey of “self-discovery” is so underdeveloped that she disappears from the story for long stretches of time. Meanwhile, the supposed romance between Eric and Francesca is more about moving the plot along than creating any real chemistry between the characters.

Visually, the film doesn’t even take full advantage of its Italian setting. Sure, it was actually shot in Rome, Tuscany, and Eastern Lazio, but instead of immersing us in the warmth and texture of Italy, it often looks like a series of staged postcards. Even the food, the heart and soul of any great Italian story, is barely a presence here.

In the end, La Dolce Villa is watchable but utterly forgettable. It’s one of those movies you put on in the background while scrolling through your phone. If you’re looking for an authentic Italian escape, you might be better off rewatching Under the Tuscan Sun —or even just heading to your local Olive Garden for a more flavorful experience.
