South Africa’s Dominant Win Over Afghanistan Sets the Stage for Australia Clash
What a statement victory from South Africa! The Proteas came out swinging in their ICC Champions Trophy opener, securing a commanding 107-run win over Afghanistan. It was a performance that not only put them on top of Group B but also sent a strong warning to their next opponent—Australia.
South Africa won the toss and decided to bat first, a bold call given the unpredictable nature of the Karachi pitch. But it turned out to be a masterstroke. Ryan Rickelton was the star of the show, smashing his maiden ODI century with a classy 103 off 106 balls. Captain Temba Bavuma provided solid support with a composed 58, while Rassie van der Dussen (52) and Aiden Markram (an unbeaten 52 off 36) made sure South Africa posted a formidable 6-315 in their 50 overs.
Afghanistan’s bowling attack, led by the experienced Mohammad Nabi (2-51), struggled to contain the Proteas' batting lineup. Their spinners, usually their biggest strength, found the Karachi pitch unhelpful, making it difficult to build any real pressure.

In reply, Afghanistan showed glimpses of fight, particularly through Rahmat Shah, who played a gutsy knock of 90. But it just wasn’t enough. South Africa’s pace attack, spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada (3-36) and Wiaan Mulder (2-36), consistently took wickets and kept the scoring rate in check. Eventually, Afghanistan was bowled out for 208 in just 43.3 overs.
South Africa’s captain, Temba Bavuma, praised his team’s all-round effort, calling it "close to our best performance." He acknowledged that the pitch had more pace and bounce than a typical subcontinent surface, which played to their strengths.
For Afghanistan, this was a tough loss. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi admitted the toss played a crucial role and that his team struggled to adapt to the conditions. With only two group matches left—against England and Australia—Afghanistan will need to regroup quickly if they want to stay in contention for a semifinal spot.
This win gives South Africa a major boost heading into their next match against Australia in Rawalpindi. The Aussies, who are yet to play their first game, will be watching closely. If South Africa can bring the same intensity, we could be in for a cracking contest when these two sides meet.
It’s still early days in the tournament, but South Africa has made their intentions clear. They’re here to win, and after this performance, the rest of the competition has been put on notice.
