Sunwing Cancels All Southbound Flights from Montreal, Frustrating Travelers

Sunwing has just announced the cancellation of all its flights to southern destinations departing from Montréal-Trudeau Airport on February 20. And let me tell you—passengers are absolutely furious. The airline cited the lingering effects of last Sunday’s winter storm as the main reason, stating that they needed to prioritize bringing home stranded travelers before sending new ones off on vacation.

Now, in theory, that sounds reasonable. But in practice? It’s a complete nightmare for those who had their bags packed, ready to escape the cold, only to be left stranded at the airport with little to no alternative. Hundreds of Quebecers, some traveling from Outaouais, Abitibi, Drummondville, and Montérégie, showed up at the Sunwing counters on Thursday morning, expecting to finally take off—only to be told their flights were canceled yet again.

One traveler summed up the frustration perfectly: “We were supposed to leave Monday, then it got pushed back repeatedly. We showed up today, thinking it was finally happening, but now it’s just canceled altogether.” Others vented about losing precious vacation days, wasting time and money, and being left with no clear answers from the airline.

And let’s talk about the financial burden. With no flights available, many passengers had to book last-minute accommodations at the Marriott near the airport—at a jaw-dropping $450 per night. Some are holding onto their receipts, hoping Sunwing will reimburse them, but there's no guarantee.

People are angry. They’re losing workdays, missing long-awaited vacations, and dealing with the stress of uncertain travel plans. One man, clearly exasperated, put it bluntly: “We wait all winter for this, just to get stuck here in the cold. Thanks, Sunwing.”

Now, Sunwing has promised full refunds within 21 days. They’ve also issued a statement saying this decision was "difficult but necessary" to ensure stranded passengers return home safely. They apologized for the inconvenience, claiming their team is working hard to minimize further disruptions.

But for many travelers, an apology isn’t enough. This isn’t the first time Sunwing has been at the center of a travel debacle, and for some, it might just be the last straw. After all, what good is a vacation if you can’t even make it to your destination?
